Saplings, the same day

On the same day, from shortly after eight in the morning, students and staff planted saplings around the school: in red pots on the veranda and along the walls, in a large pot beneath the school's sign, and in small pots on the grass. Children filled the pots with soil and pressed it down around each sapling, and the saplings were watered in.

A sapling in a pot is a small thing. What it asks of a child is attention over weeks, not an afternoon: someone has to water it, and someone has to notice when it wilts.
